Can you help us protect and develop our heritage listed Church?
St Peter’s Anglican Church is situated on Killarney Street in Takapuna. It has served the Parish and wider community of Takapuna for over 65 years. It is Heritage listed (which in our case means the exterior should remain unchanged) and Earthquake prone (we have 30 plus years to address this). It is fundamentally untouched from when it was built over 65 years ago for a very different world.
Currently, the church faces several urgent challenges:
- The roof is leaking and requires replacement, along with repairs to the internal damage caused by the leaks.
- The electrical system is outdated and needs to be upgraded.
- The steel windows are rusting, the woodwork at the top of the bell tower is deteriorating, and access inside the tower is unsafe by today’s standards.
- The church toilets are in disrepair, making them unsightly and unusable.
In addition to addressing these issues we want to make the Church more suitable for current and future needs and strategically concentrate Parish activities on the existing Church footprint, rather than the combined Church and Hall footprint. This involves building new offices, a kitchen and dining area/meeting room, a mezzanine floor meeting area and new toilets.
Our Developed Design plan encompasses the above, meets the Heritage requirements and includes the earthquake strengthening needed to get us to 67% of the New Building Standard (NBS). Our early estimate to implement the developed plan completely is $4 million. We have so far raised $292,000 from Parishioners and fundraising activities and Grants.
We believe that raising the required money to do everything will take a while. The deterioration of the Church is of course continuing (dripping during a service and a slow collapse of ceilings is most unpleasant). Additionally, the government has announced a review of the NBS ratings system which may affect the earthquake strengthening requirement and cost. (Estimated cost 11/7/23 is $1.82 million of the above $4 million).
Given this we have decided to focus our efforts on the renovation of St Peter’s, drawing down our Parish investments as needed. We currently draw an income from those investments for day-to-day operations and reducing them will reduce our future income. We would be very grateful for any help and financial support to reduce the degree to which we must do this.
The work we plan to do in the coming months is expected to cost around $1.75m plus GST and includes:
• The removal of inner walls to create a new hospitality space with kitchenette
• Upgrading the electrics (replacing the switchboard and wiring),
• Replacing the leaking roof and gutters and repairing damaged soffits,
• Repairing the woodwork at the top of the bell tower and making access safer,
• Fixing and painting the steel windows,
• Cleaning up the interior damage (base of bell tower ceiling and lady chapel),
• Repainting inside and out to refresh the look of St Peter’s,
• Making the existing Church toilets functional within newly renovated bathrooms.
In a nutshell we are shortly going to give St Peter’s a good makeover to improve its appearance and usefulness to us and the wider community.
Thank you for your consideration.
